So here it is, I finally joined the rest of the universe and started a blog. This here is my first post so I’m going to cheat a little and use most of what is in the About Shevek page!
I need to lose weight. In June 2006 I hit 20 stone (which is 280 lbs in American), I’m 6’2″ so I was officially Obese (a BMI of 35.9). With two kids depending on me I needed to lose the weight or they might be part of a single parent family far too prematurely.
Chris’s post inspired me to do what I had been putting off for a long time.
For a couple of years through 2004 / 2005 I had held steady at 19 stone 2 lb (268 lb) and although I wasn’t happy with it, I wasn’t unhappy enough to do anything about it yet.
Then I don’t know what happened. I started eating more and just couldn’t stop myself. In six months I put on 12 lb and hit 20 stone.
That was nearly 3 months ago and I’ve now lost over 3 stone (44 lbs today, August 29th), I have another 2 stone to go for my final target of 15 stone / 210 lbs.
My method so far has been portion control and calorie counting – I try to limit myself to 1500 calories and 40g of fat a day and I use the FitDay website to keep a daily log of all the food I eat. It’s a fantastic resource with a huge database of food items plus it allows you to add in custom foods – all for the extremely reasonable price of nothing!
I keep an XLS of my progress, logging weight and calories which draws nice graphs for me. It’s based on The Diet Spreadsheet by Jeremy Zawodny with a few customisations by me. I’ll upload my custom version next time I’m at home.
Exercise is my big problem – I don’t do enough, in fact I do almost none. I work in IT, I’m a programmer and I’ve just been promoted to Deputy IT Manager so my job is completely sedentary. Other than that I have the usual excuses of no time due to kids etc etc etc – in other words I have no excuse. I need to get off my lazy behind and do something.
Thats another reason for this blog, I’m going to keep an Excercise category so hopefully its emptiness will shame me into doing something!
That’s all for now, I’ll be regularly posting my Weigh In, Calorie Count and Exercise and less regularly my general thoughts on how things are going. Hope you’ll stick around to hear it!
